Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s trial is the gift that keeps on giving for deception detection.
Sometimes it’s not what people are doing that indicates deception. Sometimes it’s what’s missing. Check this out:

Did you notice what’s missing? She’s crying but doesn’t have tears or a red face. Hmmm.
Notice how with the Kleenex she dabs between her eyebrows. That’s not where tears are if they were there.
She also recovers too fast from the crying and is able to settle herself down too quickly. The chemicals that are released during any type of strong emotion have a half life and fade gradually into the next emotion. This isn’t what we see here. It’s more like she flipped a switch.
My official analysis: This is a ridiculous piece of acting.
But it doesn’t end there. She decided to explain herself on a Dateline NBC interview. But this time I’m more interested in the interviewer.
Here’s your Bonus Question for the month: What emotion does Savannah Gutherie show during this interview with Amber Heard shot about a week after the end of the trial? The first 3 correct answers get a copy of my book, How to Detect Lies, Fraud and Identity Theft. Good luck!
